Why do pizza stones crack, and how do I prevent it?

Later than most people think. Cordierite darkens, stains and eventually cracks, and none of those three things is by itself a reason to buy a new one. The test is whether the floor is still flat and still transfers heat evenly, because those are the only two properties that affect a pizza.
