Turning Peel vs Launch Peel (2026)
These are two tools for two jobs and neither substitutes well for the other. A launch peel is wide and flat so a topped raw pizza can slide off it in one motion. A turning peel is small and round so you can spin a baking pizza in place without dragging it out of the oven. In a sixty second oven you will need both, because a pizza that is not turned will burn on one side.

Choose the 8 inch Aluminium Pizza Turning Peel if…
You have an outdoor oven with a live flame or a hot back wall, which means one side of the pizza is always getting more heat than the other. A small round peel lets you slide under, lift slightly and spin the pizza a quarter turn every fifteen or twenty seconds without taking it out of the chamber.
The technique takes a few pizzas to learn. Get the blade under the leading edge rather than trying to shove it beneath the middle, lift only enough to break contact, and turn with the wrist rather than the whole arm. Doing this well is the single biggest step up from burnt-on-one-side to evenly baked.

Choose the Hans Grill Bamboo Pizza Peel 12 inch if…
You need to get the pizza into the oven at all, which is the job nothing else does. A wide flat peel supports the whole base so it launches in one movement rather than folding. This is the peel to buy first, and for a kitchen oven with a five minute bake it may be the only one you need.
Match the width to your oven mouth and check the handle length against how far you have to reach. A peel that is wider than the opening cannot be used, and a short handle on an outdoor oven puts your hand in the heat every single launch.

Reviews of the peels named here
Each peel type has a full review. The Newmeto 7 inch turning peel review covers the $17.99 tool most new oven owners skip, and the reach problem that makes it the wrong choice for a 16 inch oven. On the launching side, the Ooni 12 inch perforated peel review covers the default metal peel for a 12 inch oven, and the Gozney 14 inch Pro placement peel review covers the $99.99 option and the Gozney ovens it does not fit.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I turn the pizza?
In a 900F oven, roughly every fifteen to twenty seconds, so three or four turns across a sixty second bake. In a cooler oven, less often. Watch the pizza rather than a clock: the side facing the flame or the back wall colours first, and that is your cue.
Can I turn a pizza with the launch peel?
You can pull it out, turn it and put it back, and plenty of people do at first. It costs heat every time the pizza leaves the chamber, it risks dropping the pizza, and it is slow enough that the near side keeps cooking while you do it. In a fast oven the small peel pays for itself immediately.
What size turning peel should I get?
Around seven to nine inches for a 12 to 14 inch pizza. Too small and it will not support the base while you lift, too large and it is no longer nimble in a small chamber. Perforated blades are common and shed flour, which keeps the stone cleaner.
Should the turning peel be metal or wood?
Metal. It goes into the oven repeatedly during a bake, so a thin metal blade that can slide under a partly set base is what you want, and wood would char. Wood is for launching, where sticking is the problem, not for turning.
How we choose: we compare published manufacturer specifications, verified owner reviews, and long-established baker's percentage practice. We do not test gear in person. Dough figures are guidance, not a recipe guarantee: flour, water and room conditions all vary, so read your dough as well as the numbers.
Heat safety: a pizza oven at working temperature holds a 700F to 950F floor and a shell hot enough to burn on contact. Use long-handled peels and heat-rated gloves, keep children and pets clear, burn fuel outdoors only with clearance from anything combustible, and never pour water on a hot baking stone. Water flashes to steam instantly and thermal shock cracks stone.
